Stonewall Statement on GOP Promotion of Anti-Family Amendment Party-Line Vote Sends Amendment to Full Senate
Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats issued the following statement on the promotion of the federal anti-marriage amendment to a full Senate vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee:
"In is immoral for Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee to attack the Constitution by sending the anti-marriage amendment to the Senate floor. Republican Chairman Arlen Specter underscores the chronic control that corrupt special interests hold over Senate Republicans. A Democratically-controlled Judiciary Committee would have defended the Constitution by killing this amendment on the spot. Instead, Republicans will once again use this measure to divide Americans for partisan purposes. Democrats do not believe in forcing the federal government to dictate family policy to individual states." - Jo Wyrick, NSD Interim Executive Director.
The amendment was promoted along strict party lines, with all Democrats on the committee voting against. Anti-gay organizations were quick to praise Senator Arlen Specter and the Republicans on the Committee. "Today's party-line vote illustrates a stark contrast between [Republicans and Democrats]," said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins. "Chairman Specter is to be thanked for scheduling a vote on this most important constitutional amendment. Also, I thank the Republican members of the Committee."
Republican Senate Leader Bill First has vowed to hold a full Senate vote on the amendment the first week of June.
